Expermental Type Research

This piece someone used ink to paint a gradient on the old factory's windows and then rubbed out the ink to create the letter-forms. This was so that the sun light would change the look of the lettering throughout the day as it shines through. I picked this because I am interested in large scale typography and art installations.

I selected this because of the main typography header and the technique that has been used to get the style.

This would be possible by using a roller or paintbrush to paint the red shape and then placing it over the hand image in Photoshop. The typography looks like it was done with cut out shapes like typesetters printing blocks and then used to stamp on the lettering. This creates a blended rough look to the letterforms and could represent the theme that was based on people living on the limits of society who can’t get job or legal papers.

Card was used to cut out and create extruded letter-forms.

This is one experimental idea that I really enjoyed, the word in Indian means the smell of rain on dry ground. This is represented by using stencils with water over the top to create the letter-forms and then it will change over the day until it has dried up. I would like to try this out someday to see what other effects can be done. The making of this piece can been seen in this animation: http://typerventions.com/post/26513237849/typeout-2-petrichor-making-of-full-story-here

This I have picked because I like mixed media pieces and this had some interesting combinations of mixed media typography.

Research

I have done research from the internet as well as books some of the books below.

Books I have looked at so far (Some of my own and loaned books from the university):

  • Graphic Design Referenced
  • The Fundamentals of Typography
  • 100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design
  • The A-Z of Visual Idea (A suggested reading book)
  • Typographic Systems
  • Typography Sketchbooks
  • New Modernist Type
and other books based on grids and sketch books of designers.

Some examples of Neville Brody's work I have looked at:

Argument Type

Type idea and expression 01
To start off with my idea generation I decided to create a simple design based on the first few lines. I used a rough looking background because the argument seems to get louder and faster as it goes on and I think this expresses the one on one argument without the audience laughter. I only used one typeface for this which was Futura and used a number of different weights, some examples are light condensed and extra bold condensed oblique. I decided to use a heavy type weight for male two who was looking for an argument and in my view it represents his voice and volume. However for male one I used a light weight condensed for his voice as it was calm even when the argument got to its loudest volume and to suggest the over all confidence of him making his point that he did.

I am going to try out more ideas which I will have to get to a stage where I can say where I am going with the brief  for next Monday.

Uploading all my research and experiments soon in bulk
Here is the transcript for the second sound brief.
Argument Transcription
*knock*
Male one: Come in!
*Door*
Male two: Is this (where?) I call for an argument?
Male one: I told you once *quiet calm tone*
*audience little laugh*
Male two: No you haven’t
Male one: Yes I have
Male two: when?
Male one: Just now
Male two: No you didn’t
Male one: Yes I did
Male two: Didn’t
Male one: Did
Male two: Didn’t
Male one: I’m telling you I did
*Male two interrupts before “did”*
Male two: You did not *rising pitch/volume*
Male one: Oh sorry is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?
Male two: Oh *high pitch/volume* Oh, just the five minute one *normal voice*
Male one: Fineee *rising *
*object slam (door shut?)*
Male two: acuurr *clearing throat*
Male one: Thank you
*moves chair to sit on*
Male one: Anyway I did
Male two: You most certainly did not
Male one: Now let’s get one thing quite clear. I most definitely told you.
Male two: You did not
Male one: Yes I did
Male two: You did not
Male one: Yes I did
Male two: Didn’t
Male one: Yes I did
Male two: Didn’t!
Male one: Yes I did
Male two: Looook this is an argument

Research and Own Typography

Ford, S.  (n.d.) Letter Mapping [ONLINE]. Available at: http://samfordsamford.co.uk/index.php?/ongoing/letter-mapping/ [Accessed 07 March 13].

I have chosen this typography because of the process that was undertaken to develop it and its visual impact. This process was a form of triangulation where the designer imagined points around the letter-forms to create the triangles. The colour was worked out by measuring the three angles in each triangle and then putting the numbers into RGB references. After the researched I decided to experiment with triangulation to understand how it worked to create letter-forms of this style.

For this experiment I used words from a song name which was in my head at that time and I focused mainly on the letter-forms without connecting the negative space to create a slightly more legible style.
